Everything You Should Know About Sailing with Pets

Sailing with pets in Croatia is not that complicated. Just imagine, sailing and dropping anchor in a quiet bay near Split or Rogoznica. Greeted not only by turquoise water but also by the wagging tail of your dog or the curious stare of your cat. Sailing with pets brings joy and companionship. With just a little extra preparation, your four-legged friend will feel as comfortable on board as you do.

If you are considering to bring your pet along for the first time, here’s a guide to help make the experience smooth, safe, and enjoyable.

Is Your Pet Ready for Boat Life?

Most animals adapt surprisingly well to life at sea. Dogs that are confident and curious usually love it, while cats often enjoy the calm corners of a yacht where they can curl up and watch the world go by.

If your pet has never been on a boat, start small. A short dinghy ride, a local excursion, or even an afternoon on a friend’s boat is a great first step. These test runs help your pet get used to the motion and sounds before you set off on holiday.

On these short trips, watch how your pet reacts to the noise, the motion, and the confined space. If necessary, repeat a few times. Early experiences will tell you a lot about their comfort level and let you decide if bringing them along is feasible or if you should be making other arrangements for them.

Basic obedience is helpful, but adding a few simple “sailing commands” makes things even easier. Teaching them to go “below” during maneuvers or to “stay” in the cockpit keeps both the pet and crew relaxed.

Health and Safety First

Before your trip, book a quick check-up with your vet. Make sure vaccinations are up to date and ask about seasickness remedies or parasite protection.

In the Adriatic, sun and heat are the main challenges. Always provide shade and plenty of fresh water. Salt water may look harmless, but it irritates skin and eyes. If swallowed, it quickly causes dehydration. A quick rinse with fresh water after a swim or beach walk helps wash away salt and sand, keeping paws and skin comfortable.

Packing a small first-aid kit with the basics: paw balm, antiseptic spray, and any prescribed medication. It gives peace of mind and ensures little scrapes don’t spoil the holiday.

Entry Requirements: Passport or Certificate?

Navigating entry rules for Croatia is simpler than it seems. If you are an EU resident, your pet must have a blue EU Pet Passport. For those arriving from non-EU countries (like the UK, USA, or Canada), you will need an EU Animal Health Certificate issued within 10 days of your arrival. In all cases, your pet must be microchipped and have a valid Rabies vaccination recorded. Learn more on the official website of the Croatian Government.

Gear That Makes Life Easier

Sailing with pets requires a little extra equipment, but it pays off. Here are the essentials you may think about:

  • Life jacket with handle – This allows you to pull your pet back on board safely.
  • Leash and harness – For shore walks and marina strolls.
  • Non-slip mats – Pets need stable footing, especially when the boat heels.
  • Spill-proof bowls – Keeps food and water in place even in choppy seas.
  • Comfort corner – A crate or bed with a familiar blanket helps pets settle down below deck.
  • Waste management – artificial turf patch or pads and biodegradable bags. For cats their transportable litter box.

Don’t forget paperwork. If you plan to sail beyond Croatia, many countries require pet passports, microchips, or health certificates at entry.

For guests sailing with children or pets, we strongly recommend having a safety net installed before your departure. It creates a secure barrier along the deck and lets you relax knowing everyone on board is protected. Our Nava charter team can take care of the installation and removal for you! It requires about an hour of preparation, so we kindly ask you to request it in advance. The service is available for 150 € per booking.

If you are bringing pets, there is also a one-time cleaning fee of 200–250 per booking. This ensures the yacht remains spotless and comfortable for the next guests, while you enjoy your holiday worry-free.

Bathroom Routines on Board

Bathroom breaks are often a big question for pet owners. On the Croatian coast, it’s easy to plan dinghy rides ashore, where your dog can stretch their legs and do their business. For longer days at sea, it helps to train them to use a specific patch onboard. Cats usually adapt quickly to a litter box, though odor control is something to manage in a small space.

Daily Routine Matters

Pets thrive on consistency. Try to keep feeding times and play sessions similar to home. Even on a boat, exercise is important. Dogs benefit from shore walks and games of fetch. Cats enjoy climbing spots and toys to chase.

Mental stimulation counts as much as physical. Puzzle feeders, chew toys, or even training practice can turn a long passage into something more interesting for your companion.

Adapting to Weather and Conditions

Weather plays a big role in how pets experience life at sea, especially in places like the Adriatic where summer heat is common, but even in summer months occasional storms occur. Planning for both extremes helps keep them comfortable and calm.

  • Sun and heat. The midday sun can be harsh, so provide shade in the cockpit with a bimini or extra canvas. Cooling mats or damp towels are a simple way to help pets regulate body temperature. Light-colored or short-haired animals may need pet-safe sunscreen on sensitive areas like ears or noses.
  • Cold and damp. Even in Croatia, evenings at anchor can get chilly before or after July or August. A lightweight pet jacket or an extra blanket goes a long way, especially for smaller or thin-coated breeds.
  • Salt and sand. After swims or beach walks, rinse pets with fresh water. Salt irritates skin and paws, and sand between pads can cause sores if left too long. Use the stern shower or keep a small spray bottle of fresh water .
  • Rough conditions: Always decide where your pet will ride out bad weather. A non-slip bed, crate, or simply a familiar resting spot below deck gives them a sense of security and prevents accidents when the boat starts moving unpredictably.

Cruising Across Borders

Most of our guests stay in Croatian waters, but if you plan to visit neighbour countries (e.g. Montenegro), let us know in advance. We’ll prepare the boat’s paperwork, and you’ll need to check pet regulations yourself. Some countries are very relaxed, while others have stricter entry rules. Carrying copies of vaccination records makes the process smoother and avoids unnecessary delays.

Emergency Planning

Every sailor prepares for the unexpected, and pets should be part of that plan. Think in advance about what you would do in different scenarios, so when stress levels are high you already have a routine.

  • Safe spot in bad weather. Decide where your pet will stay during busy maneuvers or rough weather so they always feel secure. Practice moving them there quickly so it becomes second nature.
  • Man overboard situations. Accidents are rare, but if a pet does fall overboard, a life jacket with a sturdy handle makes retrieval quick and safe. For larger dogs, some owners bring a lightweight ramp. Running a small practice drill at the dock can be reassuring.
  • Know your route. Save details of veterinary clinics along your planned journey. Keep contacts offline in case of poor signal. Most vets in Croatia speak English!

Preparing these steps doesn’t take long, but it can make all the difference when something unexpected happens at sea.

Taking It Step by Step

The best way to help a pet adapt is through gradual exposure. Short sails first, then weekends at anchor, and finally longer cruises. Some pets will love it immediately, others may need more time. A few may never enjoy it, and that’s important to accept. The goal is to make the journey pleasant for everyone on board.
