Mali and Veli Drvenik: Pearls of Central Dalmatia

Mali and Veli Drvenik are sparsely populated islands located 6 nm from Trogir and 12 nm from Split.

Both Mali and Veli Drvenik feature numerous secluded coves and beaches that are only reachable by boat. Paired with the dreamy landscape and pristine water, they are the perfect place for an idyllic and peaceful stop on your cruise.

Mali Drvenik

Mali Drvenik literally means Small Drvenik. The highest peak of the island is Glavica (79 m) in the western part of the island. Around 50 locals live on the 3.4 square kilometers of the island, most of them tending to their olive trees or vineyards or small gardens and fishing. The main settlement is the port village called Borak. The island is car-free with no roads, which makes it a perfect sailing destination to escape the madding crowd of tourists. However, be aware that there are no cafés and only one grocery shop, and time passes really slowly here. If you seek the livelier air, then head to Veli Drvenik, which lies just a few miles off Mali Drvenik.

Where to anchor your boat

Smaller yachts usually anchor in the Vela Rina Bay, with the most beautiful sandy beach. The bottom is rocky in some places. Moreover, here you will find the only restaurant on Mali Drvenik island. Just remember that Vela Rina is exposed to southwestern winds and it is not recommended in those weather conditions.

Veli Drvenik

Yup, you guessed it Veli Drvenik means Big Drvenik, with a surface of almost 11.7 square kilometers. The only settlement on the island is the village Drvenik with a few restaurants, bakery, market, and a ferry harbor. 130 locals live on the island. If you have had enough sunbathing during your sailing trip, mix it up a little with a walk through plantations of fig and olive trees, and vineyards. Naturally, the best view is from the highest point of the island, Buhaj (178 m). In case you’re interested in some history, visit the well-preserved Church of sv. Juraj, a Gothic building from the 16th century.

Sandy paradise of Adriatic

The islands are most famous for the stunning beach and bay of Krknjasi, a.k.a. “Blue Lagoon”. It is usually quite crowded during the day, but in the afternoon, as most visitors leave back to Split and Trogir, the atmosphere changes. However, heavy westerly and southwesterly winds hit the area quite frequently, so don’t forget to check the weather forecast if you decide to stay overnight. Another option is to taste some local delicacies in the restaurant and use their complimentary buoy. Other sandy beaches are in Mala luka and Solinska bay.

Explore the underwater world

Crystal clear sea is so inviting. This area is also known as the oasis of dolphins, so don’t forget to have your cell phone ready to take pictures. There’s lots to see beneath the surface, as well. Several species of sea urchins and starfishes settle around here, which only implies that the sea is clean. Hence, it is a perfect snorkeling and diving destination.
